INVASIVE SPECIES – HOW YOU CAN IDENTIFY THEM AND HELP

It’s pretty.
The flowers smell wonderful.
It’s invasive.

You may have noticed this tree – the Paulownia tomentosa, or princess tree, empress tree, or foxglove-tree – during your visits to the park in Spring. It’s just one of many invasive species plaguing our parks – plants that spread rapidly and choke out our native plants which in turn affects our biodiversity and the habitats of the creatures who rely on native plants for survival.

Many FWCCSP volunteers help by participating in park-led invasive species control activities, joining forces with the Judge Morris Environmental Stewardship Team, or simply replacing invasive plants with native plants in their home gardens.

The Delaware Invasive Species Council has recently completed a non-native, invasive plant assessment for Delaware - ranked from severe threats to moderate to low.
